The Federal Operation Unit, FOU, Zone “A” of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, said that it intercepted contraband goods worth N1.5 billion in the month of October, even as six persons were arrested during the same period. Disclosing this in Lagos, Customs Area Controller, CAC, of the Unit, Mohammed Uba Garba, said amongst items seized during the period are 6,206 fifty kilograms bags of parboiled imported rice, 54 kegs of foreign vegetable oil, 600 cartons of foreign poultry products, 13 parcels of Indian hemp, 405 pieces of used tyres, 67 bales of secondhand clothing and 59 exotic cars.
Garba said the value of the 59 exotic vehicles which were seized from car marts at Festac and Ikoyi are valued at about N1.76 billion. The Customs boss also said that six suspects were arrested and would soon be charged to court after completion of investigation.
The vehicles intercepted are 2017 models models ranging from Toyota Prado Jeeps, Lexus Jeeps, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Camry, Coaster Bus, Toyota Hiace Bus amongst others. The Customs Boss said the vehicles are currently under detention awaiting relevant customs document from the dealers within a grace of one month.
“Some are even Bullet Proof which requires End User Certificates from the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA). Investigation will reveal further on those behind the clearance of those will reveal further on those behind the clearance of these vehicles and must face the full wrath of the law.
“The vehicles alone have a duty paid value of one billion, seventy six million, eight hundred and ninety five thousand, seven hundred and seventy two naira, two kobo only.” According to Garba, the 13 parcels of Indian Hemp will be handed over to NDLEA for further action. He however commended the support and cooperation of the military, Police, and other security agencies in making this feat a reality.
