Nigeria has formerly cut electricity supply to Niger Republic. Sources said electricity supply to Niger was cut off on Tuesday following a presidential directive. By this action, Nigeria may be complying with the resolution of the ECOWAS during its emergency meeting in Abuja on Sunday. The ECOWAS leaders resolved to impose sanctions on Nigeria following the failure of the coup leaders to return the country to democracy.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially denied the action, but authoritative source close to the company said electricity supply to Niger was cut on Tuesday following a presidential directive. Nigelec, an electricity company in Niger, confirmed the situation, saying that cities like Niamey, Maradi, and Zinder now experience long hours of power outage. Nigeria has been supplying electricity to Nigeria for a long time, which has made the country to depend on Nigeria for most of its electricity supply. The ECOWAS leaders had an emergency meeting in Abuja on Sunday where they gave the coup leaders in Niger seven days to return the country to democracy or face sanctions and possible military intervention.
Niger’s elected President, Mohamed Bazoum, was ousted in a military coup by presidential guards. Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, the chief of the presidential guards, was installed as the head of state. The coup sparked several demonstrations against the country’s former colonial power, with the French embassy coming under attack in the country.
