Today, the domestic equities market recorded mild loss as the benchmark index dipped by 1bp to 47,102.64 points, driven by sell-pressure on SEPLAT (-5.9%), MTNN (-0.1%), and FCMB (-4.2%). As such, YTD return moderated to 10.3% while market capitalisation declined ₦3.6bn to ₦25.4tn. Trading activity varied as volume traded increased 12.4% to 357.7m units while value traded decreased 21.6% to ₦6.5bn.
Across sectors performance was bullish as 4 indices gained while 2 lost. The Insurance and Banking indices gained the most, up 54bps and 36bps respectively on price uptick in NEM (+1.5%), MBENEFIT (+3.7%), UBN (+2.5%), and ACCESS (+0.5%). In the same vein, the Consumer and Industrial Goods indices rose 22bps and 11bps respectively following price appreciation in DANGSUGAR (+1.7%), HONYFLOUR (+9.9%), and WAPCO (+1.5%). On the other hand, the Oil & Gas and AFR-ICT indices shed 308bps and 5bps respectively driven by price decline in SEPLAT ( – 5.9%), ETERNA (-1.9%), MTNN (-0.1%), and CWG (-9.8%).
Investor sentiment, as measured by market breadth, improved to 0.23x from -0.15x in the prior session as 32 stocks advanced, 17 declined while 65 closed flat. We expect the local bourse to close the week bullish on improved sentiment.
