The Sokoto State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two private firms for the establishment of a mini-cement plant. The MoU was signed by the State Government BrewTech Nigeria Ltd and Saboo Group of Industries both in Sokoto. Gov. Aliyu Wamakko said the initiative was part of the “unwavering efforts of the present administration aimed at reviving the industrial sector which forms the backbone of the socio economic development.
“Sokoto State is blessed with abundant solid mineral resources which have not been adequately tapped over the years,’’ Wamakko said. Represented by Malam Dahiru Maishanu, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Wamakko restated plans to reposition the state industrially. He said the scenario inherited by the administration necessitated the provision of an enabling environment to promote industrial development.
“In the last five years, we have made concerted efforts to bring desirable change that will facilitate industrial development of the state. We have, indeed, vigorously explored strategies that would ensure conducive atmosphere for investment,” he added.
He enumerated some of the initiatives introduced to include the renovation of existing hotels to meet international standards and the empowerment of the business entrepreneurs through granting soft loans and other palliatives. “The State Government also intends to establish a fertiliser blending plant and construct the Illela border market.’’ The governor said the signing of the MoU signified another turning point in the history of the state.
According to him, it is a worthy pace setting that will attract the establishment of similar ventures that will further propel development in all facets of human endeavour. He explained that the venture would be financed by NEXIM Bank. The governor added that the project would create 200 direct employment opportunities, excluding other indirect jobs as well as boost the revenue base of the state. The Project Manager of BrewTech, Mr Michael Bjorns, promised to use its technical expertise in other African countries to execute the project within 18 months.
