Sell-Pressure on the Industrial, Banking Stocks drag performance

The first trade of the week resulted in a bearish performance as the benchmark index fell 40bps to 39,326.67 points due to sell pressure on DANGCEM (-2.6%), ZENITH (-0.6%), and ETI (-3.7%). Similarly, YTD loss worsened to -2.3% as market capitalisation fell by ₦82.8bn to ₦20.5tn. Trading activity was mixed as volume traded increased 29.3% to 301.0m units while value traded decreased 17.0% to ₦1.5bn. The most traded stocks by volume were TRANSCORP (51.7m units), HONYFLOUR (43.7m units), and CHIPLC (17.6m units) while ZENITH (₦220.3m), MTNN (₦176.8m), and HONYFLOUR (₦167.9m) led by value.

Across sectors under our coverage, performance was mixed as 3 indices lost, 2 indices gained while the AFR-ICT index closed flat. The Industrial Goods index was the biggest loser, declining 1.4% due to sell-pressure on DANGCEM (-2.6%). In the same vein, the Oil & Gas and Banking indices fell by 1.2% and 0.2% respectively following the price decline in OANDO (-5.0%), ETERNA (-7.2%), ZENITH (-0.6%), and ETI (-3.7%). Conversely, the Consumer Goods and Insurance indices rose 1.2% and 0.8% respectively on the back of gains in NIGERIAN BREWERIES (+5.6%), HONYFLOUR (+9.9%), AIICO (+5.1%), and MANSARD (+1.2%).

Investors sentiment, as measured by market breadth (advance/decline ratio), waned to 1.1x from 2.2x recorded previously as 20 stocks gained while 18 stocks lost. HONYFLOUR (+9.9%), ABCTRANS (+9.1%), and PRESCO (+8.9%) led the gainers while CHAMPION (-7.7%), ETERNA (-7.2%), and LINKASSURE (-6.5%) led the losers.
