Profit-Taking drags performance at stock market

Today, the local bourse closed in the red as profit-taking in SEPLAT (-3.1%), NB (-2.0%), and DANGSUGAR (-1.3%) dragged the benchmark index down 2bps to 47,353.22 points. Consequently, YTD return moderated slightly to 10.9% while market capitalisation dipped ₦6.1bn to ₦25.5tn. Trading activity improved as volume and value traded rose 64.3% and 53.5% respectively to 239.7m units and ₦3.9bn.

Across sectors within our coverage, performance was mixed as 2 indices gained, 2 lost while the AFR- ICT and Industrial Goods indices closed flat. The Insurance and Banking indices inched higher by 10bps and 1bp respectively on the back of price appreciation in REGALINS (+2.6%), ZENITH (+0.2%), and FIDELITY (+1.7%). Conversely, the Oil & Gas and Consumer Goods indices declined 176bps and 45bps respectively driven by sell pressure on SEPLAT (-3.1%), NB (-2.0%), and DANGSUGAR (-1.3%). Investor sentiment, as measured by market breadth, weakened to 0.01x from 0.03x in the prior session as 18 stocks advanced, 17 declined while 71 closed flat.
