Nigerians are currently under the high burden of rising food prices pushing many average households into extreme poverty as they struggle to feed. In its latest report, National Bureau of Statistics in its new report on selected food prices has said that the average price of 1kg of tomato increased year-on-year by 36.45 per cent and month-on-month by 23.66 per cent to N414.83 in July 2021 from N335.46 in June 2021.
It said that the average price of 1kg of rice, imported high quality sold loose, increased year-on-year by 12.72 per cent and decreased month-on-month by -0.93% to N552.80 in July 2021 from N557.98 in June 2021. Similarly, the average price of 1kg of yam tuber increased year-on-year by 20.39 per cent and month on month by 7.37 per cent to N308.72 in July 2021 from N287.54 in June 2021.
NBS said that the selected food price watch data for July 2021 reflected that the average price of 1 dozen of Agric eggs medium size increased year-on-year by 21.82% and month-on month by 3.79% to N577.55 in July 2021 from N556.47 in June while the average price of piece of Agric eggs medium size (price of one) increased year-on-year by 24.20% and month-on-month by 2.95% to N52.73 in July 2021 from N51.22 in June 2021.
