New electricity tariff to come into effect in June

by Business News Report

The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is to introduce new electricity tariff on June 1, its Chairman, Dr Sam Amadi, has said. Amadi, who disclosed this in Abuja at a meeting with electricity generation companies in Nigeria, said the new tariff, tagged Multi-Year-Tariff-Order, would not affect low income earners.
According to him, the tariff will attract more investors, because power generation will increase. He said that the commission had already offered licences to more than 50 independent power producers, as part of efforts to improve power generation and distribution in the country. Amadi believed that engaging more power producers in the sector would ensure competition, boost quality transmission and efficiency in services to Nigerians.
One of the participants, Mr Adeyemi Adenuga, the Chairman of Geregu Power Station, said the electricity companies were ready to meet the conditions set by NERC before the new tariff regime. He assured that the power stations would provide quality services, in line with the aspirations of Nigerians.
