My son took the last Jamb examination but when the results were released he was devastated but not in denial. He knew something wasn’t right. He didn’t even send the appeal mails to me the mother. He was scared of disappointing me. Instead, he reached out to his favorite aunt, Rukky, pleading with her to help. “Please check again,” he wrote. “I’m sure that’s not my real score.”
He made his case clearly; “how can I have A1 in Maths and Further Maths and get 46 in JAMB Maths?” he wonder aloud. Eventually, after weeks of persistence and prayer, he was granted the chance to re-sit the exam. costing the family additional financial expense. Less than 24 hours later, the actual result came out. He scored 307 instead of the initial 46 recorded for him. He scored 94 in Maths in the real result above the total recorded against his name initially. Same boy, same effort, same system. It was shocking, And guess what? the Registrar of JAMB himself admitted there had been an error. The point to ponder is now imagine if we had accepted the initial score and moved on quietly, what if our son had taken the step the young girl who took her life because of the scores Jamb gave her? How many families have had to suffer in silence across the nation as a result of this one error committed by Jamb.
This isn’t just about my son. It’s about the many bright, deserving students who may never get a second chance to prove themselves. This system must improve and be made better for our future generation if Nigeria is to move forward. It must do better.
