by Business News Report

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Chukwuemeka Wogu, on Friday said that the Federal Government had implemented the N18, 000 minimum wage in 99 per cent of its ministries and agencies. Wogu gave the assurance while briefing journalists in Lagos after inaugurating the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund building. He was reacting to a statement by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr Abdulwaheed Omar that the government had yet to pay the wage. “ I know that Abia, Lagos and some other states have also paid their workers,’’ Wogu said. He said that a bill on local content employment was before the National Assembly, and that it was aimed at prosecuting employers that breached the law on workers’ compensation. Wogu gave the assurance that officials of the Ministry of Labour would soon embark on regular visits to companies and factories to ensure best practices as regards workers’ welfare. He said that the ministry had written letters to state governors for compliance with the Employees Compensation Act signed into law in 2010.
