FG bans use of substandard materials for road construction

by Business News Report

The Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen, and says the Federal Government will no longer accept the use of substandard and unapproved materials by contractors handling road projects nationwide. Onolememen declared this in Abuja while inspecting facilities at the Sheda Quality Control Laboratory, a department of Material, Geotechnics and Quality Control of the ministry. The minister was represented by Mr Sunday Atane, an engineer in the ministry.
He said henceforth, only materials approved by the ministry would be used in road projects nationwide. According to him, the issue of quality control has been on the decline and cases of premature failure on road projects were a direct deficit of that.
Onolememen said that the measures taken by the ministry were aimed at addressing the problem of premature road failure. The minister said that measure also informed the creation of a full-fledged department to test equipment deployed for road construction.
He said the Material, Geotechnics and Quality Control department was responsible for monitoring of road projects to make sure that materials used in the construction of federal roads were of the highest quality and meet specifications.
