The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said that 203 million tonnes of cargo were moved in 2013 through the four major international airports in the country.
This was against the 229 million tonnes moved in 2012, showing 11 per cent decrease.
Mr Yakubu Dati, FAAN General Manager (Public Communications), disclosed this in Lagos.
The airports are the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Port Harcourt International Airport (PHIA) and the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA). Dati said that the MMIA recorded 214 million tonnes in 2012 against 187 million tonnes in 2013, showing a decrease of 12 per cent. “NAIA recorded six million tonnes of cargo in 2012 and four million tonnes in 2013, a 23 per cent decrease. PHIA recorded four million tonnes in 2012 and eight million tonnes in 2013, a decrease of 80 per cent.
“Cargo movement at the MAKIA, during the period under review, showed that in 2012, there were four million tonnes movements, while three million were recorded in 2013.”
The General Manager said that FAAN recorded higher mail movements in 2013 with 6.4 million against 6.0 million in 2012.
“MMIA had 1.7 million in 2012 and 2.8 million in 2013, NAIA with 3.1 in 2012 and 3.5 in 2013, PHIA had 930,326 in 2012 and none in 2013, while MAKIA had 210,190 in 2012 and 5,642 in 2013,” he said. He said that none availability of mail movement at the Port Harcourt airport in 2013 was due to the ongoing re-modeling exercise at the airport.
