Central Bank Governor, Alhaji Abdulkadir Ahmed has applied for the extension of his tenure of office at the expiration of a five-year term in June.
Authoritative sources told The Republic that Alhaji Ahmed’s request is yet to get a response from the government.
Said the source “Alhaji Ahmed is no doubt a very fine banker but I don’t know if the government has taken any decision on his application for an extension of tenure.
He added that the CBN governor’s letter was still lying before the government. Speculations are however rife that a successor may be named soon.
Alhaji Ahmed was the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank until his appointment in 1982 by ex-President Shahu Shagari.
He held the office of the deputy governor from 1977 till his appoint in1982.
Investigations conducted by The Repubic revealed that the five former governors before Alhaji Ahmed spent between four and eight years in office.
The longest serving governor, being Dr. Clement Isong, Nigeria’s wartime Central Bank governor who served from 1967 to 1975. The first governor an expatriate, late R. Fenton (CMG) served from 1958 to 1963. The first indigenous governor Alhaji Mai Bornu was CBN governor. Alhaji Mai Bornu was CBN governor from 1963-1967, Dr. Clement Isong 1967-75; Mallam Adamu Ciroma 1975-77, Mr. Ola Vincent 1977-82 and the incumbent Alhaji Ahmed.
