Port operations at APM Terminals has resumed after a three day warning strike embarked upon by Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN. Meanwhile the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, NSC, Emmanuel Jime, said at a one day stakeholders meeting on it’s role as Port Economic Regulator, PER, that the daily cost of the shutdown is between $10,000 and $20,000 daily depending on the terminal affected.
It was however gathered that the resumption of operations at the terminal followed a meeting by the NSC, the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Satefy Agency, NIMASA on the one hand as well as management of APM Terminals and the leadership of the Union. The meeting followed the initial intervention of Jime who earlier paid a working visit to the leadership of the Union and the management of APM Terminals. The President General, MWUN Adewale Adeyanju who confirmed the development yesterday, disclosed that the union and the terminal operator reached an agreement in resolving some of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA.
He said that workers are to resume operational activities at the terminal this evening. He commended management of the NPA and the Executive Secretary of the NSC for the prompt intervention to save the nation’s economy from collapse. He reiterated the Union’s commitment towards ensuring industrial peace and harmony in the shipping industry.
